- Limited movement or weakness of the injured area
- A bone that is likely broken, or looks broken/fractured
- Pregnancy
- Severe pain
- Experiencing pain for more than 10 days
- Pain that has persisted or gotten worse after using over the counter pain medications for one week or longer
- Pain originating in the stomach or abdominal region
- Other symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or signs of infection
- Less than 2 years old
- Rest, decrease movement
- A cloth full of Ice or a cold compress can be applied for a maximum amount of 10-15 minutes 3-4 times per day for up to 3 days. This is especially helpful to relieve swelling and inflammation. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
- Applying pressure or compression to the injured area (this reduces swelling)
- Elevating the area (this reduces swelling)
- Listening to music, mindful meditation or breathing exercises, acupuncture, seeing a chiropractor, massages, and creative art therapies can help to relieve pain
- Applying heat (using a heating pad, other warm compress or heat patch product) for 15-20 minutes 3-4 times daily. Heat may be applied longer if you are using a heat patch product that is approved to be used for a longer time by the manufacturer. Do not use heat with other medicines that are applied on top of the skin of the painful area.
