- Under 12 years old
- Fever
- Pain in the lower abdomen, shoulder or back
- Have more than 3 yeast infections per year
- Immunosuppression from a health condition(HIV) or medications(corticosteroids, cancer drugs, methotrexate, other medicines)
- Diabetes
- You have had a yeast infection within the past 2 months
- Other accompanying symptoms with the yeast infection
- Fishy odor right after sexual intercourse
- Pregnancy
- Allergy to latex, spermicides, or feminine care products/suspect allergy(rash, hives, itching, trouble breathing, dizziness)
- Symptoms have not resolved after 1 week of OTC self treatment
Patient DOES NOT have 2 or more of the following symptoms including a normal PH test OR 4 or more not including + PH test:
- Pain upon urination
- Redness or swelling of the vagina
- A normal vaginal PH (PH between
3.8 and 4.5, you can use a vaginal PH test kit)
- Irritation or itching of the vagina
- A white, thick discharge from the vagina (cottage cheese like discharge)
Female yeast infection with significant itching or irritation:
- The following can help to treat your condition:
- Decreasing consumption of sugars/carbohydrates
- Consuming yogurt
- Using pads instead of tampons while using OTC medicines to treat a yeast infection (tampons absorb the medicine)
- Avoid the use of soap to clean the vaginal area (rinse with water only)
- Avoid sexual intercourse if it is painful (using lubricating products can reduce irritation)
- If the area is swollen or painful, sitting in warm water(using the sits bath), or placing a damp cloth on the area can be helpful
- Avoid rubbing to relieve itching
Drug Therapy
Choose an anti-fungal suppository or cream to apply inside the vagina, ALONG WITH a cream to apply outside the vagina for the itching and irritation.

Female yeast infection without significant itching and irritation:
The following can help to treat this condition:
- Consuming yogurt
- Using pads instead of tampons while using OTC medicines to treat a yeast infection (tampons absorb the medicine)
