Burns

- A burn that is from an electrical or chemical source
- A burn with broken or blistering skin in the burned area
- A burn on the hands, feet, head, face, or joints
- Diabetes
- If you have a number of other chronic health conditions
- Immunosuppression from a health condition or medications
- AIDS
- A burn that has gotten worse after 24-48 hours
- A burn that has persisted for more than 7 days
- A large area of the skin is burned (over 2%, you can measure this by considering your hand or the hand of the person with the burn as 1%, therefore the size of two of your hands is around 2%)
- If you have any other accompanying symptoms other than pain(not severe) or skin irritation
- Over age 65 years old
- Less than 2 years old
- A burn that has occurred after starting a new medication, and without you being exposed to any more heat/light than usual(some medications can cause you to be extra sensitive to light)

  

Non-Drug Treatments

- Right after a burn, the affected area should be ran under cool tap water for 10-30 minutes, this should be done 3-6 times per day. Do not use ice to help heal a burn because it can delay the healing process.
- When the burn area is dry, a protective ointment such as neosporin can be applied and the area can be covered with a loose dressing
- Immerse the burned area in cool water for 15-30 minutes 3-6 times per day
- If the burn is painful, applying an aloe or lidocaine product can help to soothe the skin
- If pain is present, Ibuprofen or Tylenol can be taken to help relieve pain

Drug Therapy:

• Tylenol(acetaminophen)(If you have a liver condition, consult with a doctor before taking)

• Motrin, Advil(Ibuprofen) (If you have a kidney condition, choose Tylenol - above)

Complementary Products:

• Neosporin Aloe
• Alocaine (Lidocaine 4% gels or creams)
• Bandaging
• Moisturizer with aloe for sunburns

• Childrens Motrin, Advil(Ibuprofen) (If the child has a kidney condition, choose Tylenol - above)
